I have a 39A that my dad got for Christmas, I'd guess 1950's

Dad was born in 1944. He wanted the Mountie one but Grandpa could not find one anywhere.

The mountie was introduced in 1954 so that could probably give us an idea when that was if they were scarce.

My Grandpa ran a sporting goods store at one time, he used a pipe vice to sight rifles in :-). Not sure exactly how that worked but I recall my dad telling me Grandpa had done so when were messing around with that pipe vice. I still have it.

This is the type of pipe vise, I really do not understand how you could mount a rifle in there and sight it in. MAYBE if you made a wood block with a deep U groove in it to allow seeing down the top of the barrel with the rifle clamped into it.

My grandpa was an engineer so the whole thing made perfect sense to him I suppose :-).
