I don't have anything practical to add here but I just want to say that owning/carrying a vintage pocket watch will do more than just tell you the time.
It connects you to the past across the generations in a way that a pretentious overpriced "status symbol" wristwatch cannot. They are a part of the real America, from a time when men were men and things like tools and watches were proudly crafted to outlast us.
Comparing a wrist watch (regardless of how much money you dropped on it) to a 100+ year old pocket watch is comparing apples to oranges.
A wrist watch is a timepiece, while an old pocketwatch is an heirloom.
Being self employed, I am at work 24/7/365, therefore what time it is doesn't matter so I generally don't carry a watch any more, but when I did, it was my great-great-grandfather's white gold Illinois Springfield pocket watch. It was made sometime between 1879 and 1885. I am the 5th generation in my family to have owned it. It traveled the seas and went west to the frontier on horseback before coming back to New England.
Wristwatches don't get handed down like that, pocket watches do.
An old pocket watch is like an old gun. You might pay for it and therefore own it, but really you will just be the caretaker of it for your generation because they will continue their journey through time for generations to come.
