Post-64 is fine for a working gun. (ctxt)

Winchester used a different steel formulation in the post-64 receivers, resulting in those surfaces being difficult to refinish if (when) the "bluing" fails. You may see used examples with much of the receiver finish gone, but it's a cosmetic issue only - the rifles still function just fine. I have one that looks like new; I imagine many of them were worn because of hunters carrying them at the balance point rather than using a sling.

Some of the post-64 rifles have stamped steel cartridge lifters, though I believe Winchester did return to using machined steel versions of that part later on.

If you find a top-eject 94 that your dad likes, check with Pearson Tactical for a forward-mounted optics rail. Scout scope, red dot, whatever - it's a nice "no permanent modification" solution to putting optics on the 94.

If you're inclined toward the side-eject Marlins, I'd pay for the JM marked earlier guns.
